Description
The Mamluk (meaning “owned” or “slave”) Sultanate preceded the Ottoman Empire, lasting from 1250 to 1517. Its tiles were largely blue and white with some turquoise and purple making an appearance. The tile on which this painting’s design is based is from Mamluk Damascus and dates to the 15th century.
